Egyptian Method of Irrigation
The main method of irrigation used in Egypt was the Basin Irrigation. The picture to the left illustrates how people used this structure to distribute water to every crops in the 1.5 meter radius, using a shadoof. However, there is still more advantages to this method of irrigation. First, this method would let water to stay in the soil for 40 days at a time so this way, it will reduce work for the Egyptian slaves or farmers. Next, when the Nile happened to flood at some particular time of the year, the farmers take advantage of this so therefore water will stay for a longer period of time. Despite there being some advantages, people had to work hard before achieving these advantages. Before even planting, the farmers had to first build a canal to bring the the water from the nile to their crops. Then, once that canal is finished, Egyptian farmers had to then build ditches around their crops to avoid clay and other materials from getting into their crops. |
